Challenge

Orange was approached by a team of former financial executives to partner and create a company that helps millennials achieve financial health. After several recessions in their lifetime, members of America’s largest generation have come to distrust conventional financial institutions. On top that the experiences modern banks provide are not much different than the ones provided decades ago. This skepticism and antiquated industry has fueled the need to invent honest and transparent solutions—a challenge we were excited to take on.

Approach

Instead of developing a fast-go-to-market product, we used our strategic and human-centered design approach to build an entire company, brand, and product from the ground up—all in parallel. This would create an interconnected, consistent experience across different touch-points. At its core it was to be an engaging money management app that challenges the current status quo of this industry and empowers millennials to reach their financial goals. Our strategists and experience designers worked closely, often sharing desks and offices, with the Dobot team and software developers. With our strategic design approach and knowledge in human behavior and technology, we focused on building a connection between the user and the digital experience.

Celebrating saving

We built the Dobot brand thoughtfully—it is smart and friendly, conveys transparency, reestablishes trust, and fuels confidence in young people to take control of their financial future. At the heart of the experience is “my Dobot”, the personal financial advisor that communicates with each user and guides them in a simple but educational way though their finances. Based on each individual’s goals and spending behavior, savings are accumulated by automatically and securely transferring small amounts of money from a checking account to the Dobot savings account. The saved money is then displayed with a visual design language that celebrates the actual process of saving, creating a feeling of achievement. With Dobot, we built more than a new app—we created a valuable tool that empowers young people every day to learn how to better manage their money and achieve their goals.
