Challenge

Massage Envy was a wildly successful business when we started working with them—over 1,000 locations across 49 states, employing over 22,000 massage therapists and topping $1.2 billion in annual system-wide sales. But they had a problem. The business had outpaced the brand. We began working with our clients to redesign the brand, communications and experience in a way that could be implemented across a nationwide network of franchised stores.

Approach

We researched the space, talked to customers inside and outside of the brand, empathized with massage therapists and gained clarity into the inner workings of a franchise-owned system. We used this input to evolve the company’s mission statement and began to update a brand that sought to play a bigger role in people’s lives.

Designing a brand to suit a national franchise

The branding presented an opportunity to build equity into the celebration of the individual. The new Massage Envy ID is a bold, simple icon that puts primary focus on the individual with its hidden-in-plain-sight meaning. We then extended that brand across a rich system of artifacts that unite all parts of the experience.

Strategically extend the brand to the space

Next, we created a brand expression to be installed in storefronts that would allow owners to upgrade their spaces and adopt the new brand into the stores themselves.

Defining the experience

When we dug into the brand, we found that Massage Envy represented a lot more than just a convenient place to get a massage. For its customers, the brand provided accessible care that helped them deal with the ups and downs of everyday life: A democratizing force in the larger wellness movement. We used this sentiment to shape the Vision, Purpose and Values of the brand, and created communications that socialized this evolved message to every Massage Envy employee.

The integration that happens is perfectly seamless in terms of how the advertising, experience and our brand identity work all came together.

Celebrating the results

The new brand was met with overwhelming excitement and adoption from internal stakeholders and franchise owners. National rollout is still underway as stores across the country change out signage, spatial appointments and digital and physical communications.
